Friday, August 29th, 2008 Gender Spectrum Education and Training, a national educational organization addressing gender variance, is providing a full day seminar for all professionals and providers in the medical, mental health, health and human services fields. This seminar is for those who currently work, or are interested in working, with families raising gender variant or transgender children. The seminar will be held from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Friday, August 29th, at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle. Seminar topics will include:
This full day seminar will also serve as a pre-institute to the two national conferences produced by Gender Spectrum co-founders Stephanie Brill and Aidan Key. The Gender Spectrum Family conference brings together families of transgender and gender variant children from across the country. The Gender Odyssey conference is one of the nation’s most successful and longest running conferences on transgender issues. Gender specialist Stephanie Brill will lead this special and one-of-a kind workshop. Brill, who has worked with families and health care providers since 2001, is a nationally recognized voice on the subject of gender identity and children. She is co-author of the recently published book The Transgender Child: A Handbook for Families and Professionals. Brill will draw from her experience with provider trainings, direct family consultations, and K-12 student and faculty trainings to outline the common themes and struggles that are relevant to most families raising a gender variant child. She will also outline a number of case studies on gender variance and children, and delve more deeply into some of the information touched upon in her book, The Transgender Child. There will be ample question and answer periods to help practitioners and providers gain a better understanding of children who express gender variance, and more effectively determine which children might be candidates for medical transition. The seminar will will suit the needs of those new to the topic of gender variance as well as those with previous exposure to transgender or gender variant children.
