Supporting Your Child

The happiest and most well-adjusted children are the ones who know they are loved and supported. If we help them create a solid foundation for their own identity, we help our children be happy, healthy, and alive.

Learning terminology and understanding concepts of gender variance is critical. Discussing gender variance in positive, supportive ways and using affirming language communicates your love and support for your child to anyone with whom you speak—but especially to your child. Without positive language, we may really struggle when we try to discuss this with others. Learning to speak up in support of your child can take time, but it helps to ensure your child has a safe environment in which to live, play, and learn.

Having courage to move through our feelings—good or bad—allows us to discover a renewed commitment to fully celebrate, support, and love our amazing child. In fact, most parents of gender variant children and teens soon come to realize that it was our own fear and expectations that were the most difficult to overcome.
