Moving Forward

Times are changing. Granted, society does not universally accept transgender people; yet acceptance is gradually increasing. Recent portrayals of transgender people in the media—TV, print, and film—are more positive and accessible to our hearts. Still, many parents may have contorted images in their minds about transgender people, and it is extremely difficult to reconcile these harsh images with what parents know and love about their child.

It can be distressing to a child or teen to know their family, peers, and society look on them as different. Gender variance itself is not the problem: it is the rejection they experience from others who are intolerant. In fact, while we believe that no parent would ever knowingly wish harmful consequences on their child, children who have experienced family rejection for their natural expression have been very damaged by this. According to current research, pressuring or threatening gender variant children to conform to societal norms directly leads to higher risk of suicide, drug addiction, depression, and HIV infection in adulthood.
