Assumptions About Gender Identity Gender variance is a normal part of human expression, documented throughout all cultures and recorded time. The problem lies not with our child or our parenting, but with a social system that places rigid limits on a person’s normal gender expression. Despite evidence that gender is multifaceted and complex, our society acknowledges only two gender categories: male or female. This binary—or twofold—view of gender has expectations and rules that go along with it. These rules dictate the standards for clothing, activities, and behaviors. Ingrained in most of us throughout our own childhoods, these rules adversely affect gender non-conforming children in vastly different ways, and are further compounded by other influencing factors such as ethnicity, economic status, and age. • Siblings |
